Knowing your fuel cost before accepting a load helps you calculate true profitability. Fuel is typically the largest variable expense for owner-operators.
The formula: Total miles ÷ MPG = Gallons needed. Then Gallons needed × Price per gallon = Total fuel cost.
Pro tip: Track your actual MPG over time — it varies by load weight, terrain, and driving habits. Most semi-trucks average between 5.5 and 7.5 MPG.
